Challenge 13 - Beat the Manufacturer

Author: Wes

Date/Time: TBD

Map: /levels/italy/info.json probably

Premise:

In 2020 the Rhaetia Fugio Turbo S the “ultimate” version of the Fugio is released to mixed reviews. The primary criticism is that it's 2L turbo I4 does not boast the power figures you'd expect from a car of its class and price at only 235 hp. And many deem it to not have enough of a jump in power over the Turbo to warrant the increase in price. However, as with any budget-medium priced sports car a modding scene did appear. In response Rhaetia did two things. Firstly, they set about developing the Turbo ST (Download here). A variant with an improved 280 hp with a similar philosophy to the Turbo S, essentially everything it should have been to start with. And secondly, they challenged owners of modified Turbo S models to a series of races...

The idea was benchmark the new ST against modified “stock plus” S models to determine if the company had met their goal of making the ST everything the S should have been. Therefore, the modified cars had to comply with certain rules. The cars could be modified in the following ways… Download the Rhaetia_Fugio_Turbo_S Here!

Engine Modifications:

  • Boost (no restriction)
  • Turbo AR ratio (physical turbo cannot be changed)
  • Fuel Map
  • Ignition timing margin
  • Manifold Size
  • Header Size
  • Exhaust Size
  • Flywheel Mass

Engine modifications are allowed to compromise the reliability of the engine with no penalty. However, the ST must have a reliability comparable to the stock S (this simulates light tuner builds vs a manufacturer developed car). The ST is restricted in boost to fulfil Rhaetia’s philosophy of responsiveness and reliability and must use the same basic flywheel and pistons, however the engine can receive a different physical turbo set-up.

Set-Up Modifications:

  • Tyre Width (up to 235 front, and 245 rear)
  • Tyre Diameter
  • Wheel Diameter
  • Wheel Material
  • Brake Size and type
  • Brake Pad Size and Type
  • All Suspension Tune Parameters
  • +2 Aero fixtures allowed
  • Wing angle
  • ALL CARS WILL RUN SEMI-SLICK TYRES FOR SAFETY REASONS

Modified cars can be set as hardcore or as street-friendly as desired within the given modification parameters. The ST itself will be set up as road-friendly and dailyable as possible for a sports car as it is still a mass-manufactured car. This also means that the brakes will not be set up for semi-slick tyres with incorrect brake-power and balance.

Races:

There will be a series of races and challenges, both on street courses and on track, to determine who did it better, the modders, or the manufacturer.

Challenge 14? - Forced Induction Hillclimb monsters

Author: Dylan

Map: CliffRoads.zip

Premise:

To celebrate the adding of more forced induction options in to Automation Game, you must build a purpose-built hill climb monster, using as much boost, and of whatever flavour you desire. Cars must be created on the current "AL Rilma" open alpha branch on steam! Points will be awarded for every second faster than the reference car naturally aspirated car. The NA Car you are up against is the Torus F2 - V6! (Download here) It has a 2.8L NA V6 Engine delivering over 430hp @ 10,000RPM and a power to weight ratio of ~350hp/1000KG, 4 wheel drive, and a sequential gearbox.

The reference car, the Torus F2 - V6 finished the climb in 95 seconds.

Rules:

Cars are mostly unrestricted, but must follow a few basic rules...

  • Car and Engine model year must be 2020
  • Muffler: At least one muffler must be used
  • Fuel: Must be Ethanol Blend 😋 E85
  • Gearbox: Must NOT be DCT OR CVT
  • Tyres: Must be Radial Race - Rally
  • Tyres: Must be 500mm or less width of front + back. For example, 265-rear, 235-front = 500mm
  • No Carbon Fibre components anywhere
  • Optimise Weight: Must be set to 50
  • All quality sliders in Car And engine must not be used! (Set to 0)
  • Safety: Must be set to Standard 20s or above
  • Power to Weight Ratio: The automated calculation seems to be broken in this branch, so we'll enforce a maximum of 700hp at the engine to 1000kg total car weight.

Notes:

  • Every car will get 3 attempts at the hill, with the fastest time of these three runs taken.
  • Points will be awarded for every second faster than the reference car. (95 seconds)
  • Points may be awarded to interesting engine/chassis configurations

Challenge 14? - SandBlasting

Author: Dylan

Map: TOP SECRET - DO NOT CLICK

Premise:

The FIA have devised a new championship called "SandBlasting", based on FIA's own Rallycross, and inspired by the world famous Dakar rally. Manufacturers may either homologate a production car, truck or van (putting van in the rules spesificaly for @Alex ❤️) in to a capable dune-destroying offroader, or build a custom/bespoke vehicle from the ground up for the competition. Homologation cars must be no greater than $80k in cost, and custom/bespoke cars must be no greater than $60k in cost. The FIA want to promote variance in vehicle design/engineering, while keeping all entrants competitive, so there will be a power/weight limit imposed for all cars.

Rules:

If you choose to homologate a car, you may use any car from Challenge 2, 3, 5, 7 or the PRODUCTION CAR from challenge 8 as your base. Homologation rules only forbid changing of the following car parameters between the base car, and your homologation car...

  • The "Model Body" selection from the body selector (should be pretty obvious)
  • "Chassis Type"
  • "Chassis Material"
  • "Engine Placement"
  • The "Trim Body" selection
  • "Drive Type"

If you choose to build a custom/bespoke car, you have a reduced budget of $60k, but no other restrictions

Rules for all cars:
  • Budget: $80,000 if homologating, $60,000 if custom/bespoke
  • Year: 2020
  • Set techpool to +0 as per previous challenges
  • Max power/weight ratio: 400hp(300kw)/ per metric tonne
  • Quality Sliders: from -1 to +5 inclusive
  • Fuel: Ethanol E85 Only
  • Tyre: Chunky Offroad Only
  • Gearbox: Any - Including any available in the BeamNG Export! (Allows for Sequential and CVT options) - Locking Differentials recommended
  • Wings/Aero: Maximum 5 pieces (Mirrored wing sets count as 1)
  • Safety: Advanced 20s Only
  • Ride Height: 300mm or more

Notes:

The Event consists 4 rounds, of three consecutive laps of a sand-terrain track.

The racing is non-contact

The course will be VERY sandy and VERY bumpy. Please build your cars/trucks/vans with this in mind. You will need the a decent amount of ground clearance to clear the track safely. ~300mm is sufficient from my testing.

Open wheel cars ARE allowed (to permit "dune buggy" type cars)

Bonus Points will be awarded for the following achievements:

  • Most "interesting" engine configuration
  • Most sandy
  • ???

Tests:

  • Drag Race & Towing Drag Race

Speed is essential to any good commuter, the ability to get up to speed and maintain blast down the motorway is imperative to any serious businessman. Therefore, you will do a rolling race from 10 kph down the Italy runway to determine which car has the best get-up-and-go. And then repeat that test towing a trailer with copy of your car on it, this will show how the car fairs overtaking those pesky lorries up a hill.

  • Crash Test Jousting Tournament

Safety of course is paramount to any good cruiser, though the motorways are safe there is always a twat willing to risk everyone elses life to move up a slot in the traffic. Therefore, you will test your cars head-to-head. Two cars will line up on the runway at opposite ends and crash together at 120 kph, the car that fairs the best of the two will receive 1 point, the car that does the worst will receive no points, a draw gives each car 1 point. Each car will face every other car to determine a winner.

  • Speedbump Comfort Test

Speedbumps are the bain of all who drive, but especially those who commute. In and out of car parks, they only serve to make you late and delay your flee from the office. Comfort is also an important part of any good commuter car so the compliance and control of your suspension will be tested. Each car will drive over one of the speedbumps at the airport at 20 kph in slowmo. Using the pitch angle UI app you will record the peak pitch up and pitch down of the car as it goes over. The smallest difference between pitch up and pitch down wins.

  • Around the Island Economy Race

Commuters hate paying for fuel and they hate being held up. So a race will be conducted from the airport round about around the perimeter of the map for 2 laps. The first lap the cars will obey all the speed limit restrictions signposted, to simulate a typical stress-free commute. On this lap breaches in speedlimit are only allowed up to 10% when overtaking, and cars must immediately go back to the speed limit once the overtake is complete, all cars must also stay within the correct lane on the right side of the road. On the second lap all restrictions and laws are lifted, you are in running late and need to get to that important business meeting as quickly as possible. But there is a catch, you start the race with only 3L of fuel onboard, running out of fuel means you are awarded no points. The person to complete the 2nd lap first wins.

Challenge 11 - 2020 Family tourers

Author: Wes

Map: /levels/italy/info.json

Premise:

You're a family of 4 in 2020. The main breadwinner has just got a promotion and is looking to replace the old shitbox with something shiny and new. But, has a parent with responsibilities the car has to be able to comfortably hold your family plus luggage for holidays and things of that nature. So the task is to make the best mid-range family car, with just enough power to make that cross-europe holiday trip nice and easy.

Rules:

  • Wheelbase: 2.6m-2.8m
  • Price: up to $42000 (0 Techpool)
  • Seat: 5 Full seats+ required
  • Body Type: Hatchback, Wagon, Sedan, or SUV
  • Tyres: Sports Tyres Required, up to 470mm per-side
  • Fuel: Must use Premium 95 Unleaded
  • Maximum 2 aero fixtures
  • Safety Minimum: 60
  • Minimum Comfort: 35 (not scored due to wonky suspension translation from automation to beam, but there to get make sure money is spent in the right places)
  • Engine Reliability and Trim Reliability Minimum: 70
  • Quality: -1 to +5
  • Maximum P/W (Test Track Tab): 0.1
  • Transmission: Auto, Adv. Auto, DCT
  • Must have ESC
  • Must have catalytic converter and silencer

Quantitative Scored Categories:

  • Safety – Safety score and braking distance
  • Practicality – Practicality score and fuel economy
  • Reliability – Engine Reliability, Trim Reliability and Service Costs
  • Acceleration

    Subjective Scored Categories:

    Looks:

There will be a convoluted scoring system based on the above to give an overall score. I have a prototype scoring system made that gives an approximate equal weighting to safety, practicality and reliability, with acceleration being weighed at about half of each other catagory. And then looks as a small multiplier to overall result of those catagories.

    Main Test

Modern cars are efficient, economical, and powerful. Able to take a long journey with comfort and ease whilst not ruining the planet. However, how much better are they really? To find out you'll go up against the Knarr Klipper Pursuit, a 70's family hatchback with 134 hp from challenge 3 along that same route. Born in the fuel crisis of the 70's it was this sort of car that started the trend to the modern and efficient family cars we see today. For every second you beat its time you get a point, for every second under it you lose a point. And for every 0.1L used less than it you gain a point, and for every 0.1L you use more than it you lose a point. The car with the most points wins
